Salt

We have a fair amount of ice and snow here, so we spread salt (or sometimes calcium chloride) to help keep the roads and sidewalks clear. That salt dissolves into the water it liberates, and flows everywhere. The water evaporates eventually, leaving the salt behind, as a ghostly record of where it was.
